Certificates of Merit are awarded by votes approved by the 86 Member countries of WorldSkills International and the WorldSkills International General Assembly which took place in October 2021.
This year WorldSkills Ireland was delighted to nominate Steve Bowcott CEO of John Sisk and Sons for this unique award. The contribution of John Sisk and Son to quality skills training and education is well known and expressed through their ongoing recruitment through apprenticeship for skills development. As Steve steps aside as CEO the award is a timely recognition of his and Sisk’s contribution to skills development and WorldSkills Ireland.
WorldSkills Ireland is more than just a skills competition; it is a spectacular promotion of professions for young people, showcasing and inspiring world-class excellence in skills and introducing youth to a variety of careers and opportunities.
Founded in 1950, WorldSkills is a global organisation that promotes vocational, technological, and service oriented education and training. It promotes skilled careers in 89 Member countries and regions, all working with youth, educators, governments, and industries to help prepare the workforce and talent of today for the jobs of the future. WorldSkills gives youth the chance to compete, experience, and learn how to become the best in their skill of choice. From the traditional trades to multi-skilled technology careers in the industry and service sectors, supported by partners, industries, governments, volunteers, and educational institutions, WorldSkills is making a direct impact on raising the level of skills throughout the world.
Ireland joined WorldSkills International in 1956, competed for the first time in 1957 and has competed at every competition since then winning a total off:
In Ireland we have organised and run a national competition each year since 1956 providing thousands of apprentices and the skilled youth of Ireland the chance to compete for the prestigious Department of Further and Higher Education Research Innovation and Science and Skills Silver Medal.
Our main focus is to highlight the power of skills competitions as a promotional instrument for a skilled future, and to innovate vocational and higher education programmes. New ideas and processes can inspire schoolchildren and teens to dedicate themselves to technical and technological careers, and towards a better sustainable and shared future.
