Athlone Institute of Technology, in conjunction with the Road Safety Authority (RSA), launched a "first of its kind" tractor testing course designed to upskill heavy vehicle testers last May. The intensive four-day programme was developed in response to an EU Directive requiring 'fast' commercial tractors to undergo a special roadworthiness test akin to the NCT. The programme is open to upskill Ireland's 650 heavy vehicle testers.
AIT offers phase 4 and phase 6 of trade of plumbing, motor and heavy vehicle mechanics. It currently has over 200 apprentices training in these programs.
